An Asheville woman is under arrest after police say she left her two young children home alone and stole a tip jar from a restaurant.
Fahria Shields, 30, is charged with child abuse, intoxicated and disruptive and larceny by Asheville Police.
Investigators say she left her two children - ages 5 and 6 - alone in an upstairs bedroom of her unlocked apartment on Coleman Avenue Tuesday night.
Police say they were called at 10:11 p.m. to the Avenue M Restaurant and Bar at 791 Merrimon Ave in North Asheville. They were told a woman stole the tip jar and ran out of the business.
APD officers say they found Shields hiding in a shed near the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was arrested and $41 from the tip jar was recovered.
Shields told police she needed to check on her children who she claimed she were being watched by her boyfriend.
Police made a welfare check and found the two children asleep and unattended in an upstairs bedroom. The Department of Social Services placed the two children with their grandmother.
Shields is being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility on a $1,000 secure bond.
