Governor Nikki Haley said her new budget would put more money into South Carolina classrooms. But schools said they'd end up with less. In a way, both are right.
The Governor's budget does increase the amount of "recurring" funding for schools that comes from the state's sales tax.
But it eliminates millions of dollars added to school funds by the legislature last year. The net effect would be less money for teachers in schools.
At League Academy in Greenville, the principal added Literature classes for 6th and 7th graders. The school gained 4 teachers with the legislature's funding.
If that money disappears the school will be forced to decide what to cut and literature may be first in line.
"If I lose teachers, well, I have more English and lit teachers than any other subject so more than likely if cuts come through I would have to figure out where to cut those," said League principal Merry Cox.
Governor Haley said she opposes using the one time sources of money that the legislature spent last year and will not include it in her budget this year.
