Clemson University is launching a new program to help solve parking problems on campus and save students some money.
The university is partnering with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to offer four environmentally friendly cars for students to rent. Students can choose from a Chevy Volt, a Ford Fiesta, Toyota Prius and a Volkswagon Jetta. They're located in parking lots throughout the campus and some are charging at charging stations now.
Students, staff and faculty can rent one for $7.50 an hour and 20 cents after 200 miles with a flat rate on weekends.
There is also a $57 flat rate if you'd like the car for the entire day and $35 overnight.
You sign up online for $25 and that fee can be used toward your credit for driving the car. To open the car you use a card given to you upon registration.
The school is also saving a lot of money with the program. To fix parking problems by building a new garage the Clemson would have shelled out $15,000 per parking space. Bringing in the cars didn’t cost them a dime Parking Services Director Dan Hofmann said, because of a partnership with Enterprise.
“Hopefully we can get a lot of them to make that decision I don’t need my car on campus. if I need to get somewhere there’s a resource available for me," said Hofmann.
Students also said gas and paying for parking is a budget breaker so “We Car”is a great alternative.
“parking is kind of scarce and if you don’t have quarters your out of luck basically," said Jasmine Dames, a Clemson student.
Students will also receive better parking spots and can park in employee spaces.
