It seems many people in Buncombe County want to dim the lights.
Leaders approved the county's first outdoor lighting rules Tuesday night, and is giving existing developments five years to make the changes.
The rules now require existing dusk to dawn utility and security lights to have some kind of shield that will direct light downward, limiting the amount of light that reaches the property.
The planning board's original recommendation was just for new commercial and industrial development, but has now included new residential areas as well.
