It isn't "year round school" exactly. There is still a summer break, but it would be just 7 weeks long.
The Oconee County School District is proposing a modified school calendar that would have students attend class for the same 180 days they have now but it would be broken into 9 week periods.
Between each 9 week period there would be a two week break. Christmas break will be 3 weeks long.
The superintendent said the plan would reduce the amount of time students have over summer break as a way to retain information learned the previous year.
He said studies show summer vacation of 10 weeks or longer forces student to have to review too much material the following year.
The new plan would also allow students who fall behind during each 9 week period to get extra instruction.
Parents, however, will need time to adjust to different day care needs. One daycare provider said parents are not fully aware of the proposed changes which will still need board approval.
The superintendent said every parent was notified through the district's phone system and by paperwork sent home with each student.
The board could rule on the modified schedule by April. If so, it would take effect in the 2013-2014 school year.
