Spartanburg Public Safety is seeking a woman who is believed to have taken a car from a tow truck and drove thru a fence to get away.
The incident happened Tuesday at a residence on Brawley Street. According to our news coverage partners at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a woman wearing nothing but a towel came running out of a home and climbed into a Cadillac that was being picked up by a tow truck from Morgan's Used Cars. The tow truck driver had began to put the car onto a flat bed truck when the woman got into the car through a cargo area door and climbed in the driver's seat.
The Herald-Journal reports that the woman started the car and put it in reverse several times while it sat on the flat bed truck in an effort to break the tow cable. A report obtained by the Herald-Journal said that the cable broke and the woman drove the car off the flat bed truck and into the backyard of the home where she circled around several times trying to find an escape route. She then drove through the fence at the back of the yard.
Damage to the truck was estimated to be at least $500. It is unclear as to whether the car was being repossessed, the report states.
Police have identified the woman as being Lakeisha Monique Smith, 27, of Spartanburg. She has yet to be charged in the incident.
