An upstate woman was arrested and charged after authorities say she attempted to cash stolen checks at local banks in the Asheville area.
Lieutenant Wallace Welch of the Asheville Police Department said that 50-year old Vickie Lynn Brantley, of Greenville, was charged with two counts of identity theft, two counts of uttering a forged instrument and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to Welch, Asheville Police detectives became aware that citizens of North Carolina and South Carolina have become victims of a criminal organization that has broke into vehicles, stole checks and identification. Welch said that detectives discovered that a woman, believed to be Brantley, would wear disguises and cash the checks at banks throughout the area.
On Wednesday, Asheville Police received several calls about a woman attempting to cash stolen checks at local banks. Police responded and located the woman's vehicle and took Brantley into custody.
Welch said that law enforcement from 11 federal, state and local agencies have assisted in the investigation, which is still ongoing. Brantley remains in the Buncombe County Detention Center where she is being held on $200,500 bond.
