Friends, family and veterans braved the chilly temperatures early Saturday morning for a welcome home ceremony that they will not soon forget.
Around 5 a.m. troops from the 228th Tactical Theater Signal Brigade of the South Carolina Army National Guard made their way off of a bus and into the arms of loved ones to a hero's salute. The troops made their way home after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan. And for Sergeant David Middleton, it was an amazing experience.
"It feels great to be back home," said Middleton. "I felt like it took forever to get here. Now it's here and it's amazing."
Middleton, like most of the other soldiers, hugged and kissed the ones they loved after they got off the bus. When asked if how it felt to see his wife and daughter, he was in awe.
"It was incredible," he said. "I felt like I missed a lot, so I have a lot of catching up to do."
His wife was perhaps as anxious as he was to see her husband once again.
"It's just surreal," said Heather Middleton. "It just feels like it took forever to get here and now that it's actually here, it's surreal. It doesn't seem like it's actually happening."
