The former executive director of Henderson County Vocational Solutions has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $11,000.
Our coverage partners at the Times-News report court records show 57-year-old Michael Elmer Horton is charged with five counts of embezzlement, as well as one count of forgery of an instrument for falsely making a document that approves a short-term loan in the amount of $9,800.
Records also show Horton forged the signature of board chairman Anthony Chelena approving a loan.
The Times-News says Horton has since re-paid the money and said medical expenses from when he had throat cancer devastated his family's finances.
“Vocational Solutions would like to thank the Carland & Anderson firm for their great work and the Henderson County Sherriff’s Department for their follow up of this case," Anthony Chelena Chairman of Vocational Solutions Board of Directors said. "Our employee Mark Schnitzler prevented a bigger disaster. The last few years have been difficult for Vocational Solutions as they have been for many people and all area nonprofits. We are sad for Mike Horton personally, but we are even sadder that the most vulnerable people in our community, people with disabilities, didn’t get the best effort from a responsible person. We thank all our generous contributors for continuing to support the sweet people in our community with disabilities.”
Horton is expected in court Tuesday.
