The world's largest para-cycling event is headed to Greenville.
Greenville City leaders announced Monday afternoon that the World Para-Cycling Championship will move to Greenville in 2014. The event draws hundreds of athletes from around the world, including a local athlete who is thrilled about the move.
"Every day I wake up," said Bryant Young, a well known Para-Cyclist. "I look down and I still have one leg. But I still get up and I keep going."
Young lost his leg in an accident nearly 30 years ago. But that has not stopped him from achieving his goals, including cycling up Paris Mountain. And he believes the event will encourage others with disabilities to overcome and participate.
"They'll see someone who is similar to them and that may just give them the extra push to just jump in the pool, to pick up a cane and go walking." he said.
Organizers say the championships will bring an estimated 500 athletes from around the world to Greenville. Young said the impact of the event will be far reaching and a benefit to the local economy.
"That's a huge focus on Greenville," he said.
