There will be more travelers on the road for Thanksgiving in South Carolina compared to a year ago.
AAA Carolinas forecasts this will be the first holiday of the year with larger numbers of travelers compared to holidays in 2010.
A total of 611,000 South Carolinians expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. That would be an eight percent increase- nearly 49,000 more travelers – compared to last year.
More people are expected to fly to their destinations despite a 20 percent increase in fares. This is the first time in the last four years passenger air travel has increased as travelers appear to be more accepting of fees for baggage and other services.
"Thanksgiving is the most traditional family holiday with the "turkey day' always coming on a Thursday, creating a guaranteed four-day holiday for many," said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas in a written statement.
Gas prices have been declining in South Carolina for the past week.
