More than 1 million motorists are planning drive more than 50 miles from home this holiday season according to AAA Carolinas.  And falling gas prices will provide a welcomed Christmas present.

Prices at the pump across South Carolina are averaging $3.00, according to GasBuddy.com.  South Carolina currently has the fourth lowest gas prices in the country.

However, here in the Upstate prices are even lower.  Spartanburg is averaging $2.94 and Greenville comes in at $2.96 Wednesday.

Prices in North Carolina come in at $3.23 per gallon of regular unleaded.  The national average is slightly less at $3.21.

According to AAA, the pain at the pump has dropped 72 cents per gallon since the Palmetto State peaked this year on May 5.  Analysts predict that dip will contributed to a 3 percent increase in travelers this season.

“The drop in gasoline prices, higher air fares and fewer available flights on smaller planes, and the slowly improving economy mean more people will travel to visit family, friends and holiday destinations,” said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas.

Air travel is expected to be down slightly, with airfares up 21 percent over last year.
