Anderson County Council passed the second of three required votes on Michelin’s incentives package, also known as "Project Cougar" at Tuesday night council meeting.
Tuesday night's vote bring the possibilty of more jobs one step closer to becomming a reality. Anderson County leaders are trying to entice Michelin North America to the Upstate and bring hundreds of jobs.
Our coverage partners at The Independent-Mail reports interim county administrator Rusty Burns confirmed Monday night that Michelin is the company that officials have been calling “Project Cougar” during public meetings where incentives were discussed.
Michelin already employs at least 700 workers in Anderson County and has an annual payroll of $28 million.
Burns told the I-M that leaders are trying to bring two new Michelin projects to southern Anderson County.
The new projects could add hundreds of employees and another $12 million to the company’s payroll in Anderson County.
“This is still very much a competition,” Burns said to the newspaper. “We are competing with others in South Carolina and on other shores.”
Anderson County’s incentives package reportedly offers Michelin tax breaks for up to 40 years according to The Independent-Mail.
