The sneezing, coughing, itchy and watery eyes you have been experiencing may be due to the weather.
“It is kind of unusual. My dad has been sick since before Christmas and my sister has been sick for six weeks," says Vickie Muller.
Now, Muller and her daughter are suffering too.
According to Dr. Emmanuel Sarmiento, it's not the flu.
“Allergies effects one in four Americans. It's a very common problem."
But this year, the unseasonably mild temperatures has prompted some plants to begin their growth cycles early, which means those accustomed to experiencing allergies in the spring, may start having symptoms earlier.
A tree pollen count of 80 is significant, says Dr. Sarmiento. However, the readings this week have been more than double that.
“We are hoping for a frost. A good frost will really get rid of the pollen,” Dr. Sarmiento adds.
Even if the temperatures don't drop, rain could help alleviate the discomfort for at least a couple of days.
In the meantime, Dr. Sarmiento recommends using an over-the-counter antihistamine and stay indoors. He doesn't know if Mother Nature will follow his orders.
