Betty and Lawrence Lynch say the closet in the bedroom of their Spartanburg home is usually covered with mold.
"It would just eat up, and smell, and get all over the clothes," said Mr. Lynch.
On Friday the Spartanburg Housing Authority cleaned the mold. The Lynchs say they had been asking for that to be done for at least a year. They claim it never would have happened without 7 On Your Side.
"It's been very frustrating when you need something done and no one responds to you," said Mrs. Lynch.
We took their concerns to the Spartanburg Housing Authority's Director of Housing Operations, Carolyn Rhodus. Rhodus told us their records show they haven't had a complaint from Betty Lynch since August of 2009.
The Lynchs disagree. That's why Rhodus said she will talk to them more about who they called and when.
"(We want to) work with them to find out if communication broke down and, if so, where so we can hold appropriate staff members accountable," said Rhodus.
The Lynchs are grateful the SHA cleaned it up but want to get to the bottom of what's causing it. Rhodus said they're working on getting an outside company to address it.
"We really want to see why this mold is re-occuring," said Rhodus. "There has to be a reason, but our maintenance crew could find no moisture in the unit."
In the meantime, Rhodus said any tenants who don't feel like they are getting their voice heard should file a formal complaint in writing at the SHA headquarters on Caulder Avenue.
Mrs. Lynch says she hopes next time she needs help it won't have to go that far.
"We hope in the future we can work with them and they can work with us," she said.
So how do you control mold in your home? The Environmental Protection Agency says the key is moisture control. It says you must dry water-damaged areas within 24-48 hours to prevent growth. For more info and details about how mold affects your health click here.
