A public dove field at the end of a private road has residents asking for help in maintaining it.
The Poole family has lived on Hatchett Drive in Spartanburg County for almost two decades.
But a few years ago, they got some company on their private road.
“They fill this driveway up right here, park on both sides of it. They come off that little side road right there. They'll have them all the way down to the gate,” said Dennis Poole.
He’s referring to hunters, who use the private road to get to the public dove field at the end of it.
Poole says the extra traffic during hunting season has him and his neighbors worried about the added wear and tear.
“I just don't want it to get so bad where we got to put signs out there to keep them from going out there,” said Poole.
He says they called the county to try and get help maintaining the road. But it's not a county field and were told it's up to them.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources runs the field.
The Pooles say after several unsuccessful attempts at getting answers from DNR crews at the field, they contacted 7 On Your Side.
DNR officials tell us they will take care of any problems they cause on the road. And that residents can rest assure they won't be left to maintain it on their own.
They say they won't take on full responsibility in maintaining the road, but will do their part, as needed.
"Our use is 2 or 3 months out of the year and it’s heavy on a few days,” said Regional Wildlife Coordinator Tom Swayngham. “Any damage we cause we'll be glad to try to fix.
Welcome news to the Poole family who doesn't mind sharing, as long as they get their fair share.
