Students Use Twitter To Avoid Police When Drinking

A twitter feed could help students avoid police when they drink and drive.

Clemson Drinking Twitter

It started in Columbia and now its in Clemson. A twitter page helps students avoid police if they drink underage or drink and drive.

At USC in Columbia a student launched the page to help his fellow students find out where police were working undercover and looking to bust drinkers. It also collects tweets from students who alert everyone about where police cruisers are lurking in real time.

The Clemson version is @Clemsondrinking and has the same type of information. Students asked by 7 On Your Side said they were aware of the site and what fellow students used it for.

"I've seen people post on Facebook about it and seen people tweeting about it," said one student

"Its just something where people can post where cops are, like if they have a checkpoint outside a neighborhood," said another.

But police worry that the information will make young drinkers think its safer to engage in risky drinking if there is less danger of getting caught.

"There's no doubt that to some degree public safety is threatened," said Clemson city police chief Jimmy Dixon.

Drinking Ticket CEO Alex Waelde said his company does not condone underage drinking or drinking and driving.  In fact, he said, the company intends to move away from the twitter function to a phone application that would include a "safe ride" feature.

Waelde said that feature would allow users to find sober rides whenever they feel they've had too much to drink.

He said that app would be available in about two months.
