How to Dress for an Interview: Employers tell us

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Hundreds of people lined up for a BMW job fair Wednesday at the Spartanburg community college tyger river campus.

Many of them are trying to leave the unemployment roll and go back to work.

But we noticed while covering the story how casually some of the applicants were dressed, wearing flip-flops and shorts.

Yes, it was hot.

But their clothing could keep them from landing their dream job.

News channel 7 talked to the folks at MAU, the company hiring the production workers.

And the company says, what you wear can -sour- a potential employer in seconds.

Zach Brewster, operations manager at MAU says if someone was wearing flip flops and shorts, he would think twice before hiring them.

He says, “I would wonder if they really wanted to work would be a question in my mind and so we try to prepare people in the community, some people just don't know."

What could be even more concerning for job-seekers is that what you wear on an interview could be just as important as your qualifications.

Brewster adds, "All of our decisions are based on totality on the whole of the interview so your appearance does matter."

Debra Giordano, regional director at career source says, "The best thing we tell people is find out they dress and then dress up a notch from that."

For men, that often means wearing a suit.

Don't have one or can't afford one?  Your local career source can help.

Giordano says, "We do have a dress for success closet, professional dress. We mostly have men’s clothes"

For women, if you are on a budget, head to the Salvation Army.

They have brand name clothes at discount prices. You can get a whole suit, plus shoes and a purse for under 30 dollars."

Ray Morton, co-officer at Salvation Army in Spartanburg says, "Everything from shirts, blazers, pants, skirts, we have shoe department all the accessories you might need including purses, belts."

Debra Giordano at "career source" says if you want to stay cool in the heat but still dress to impress, women should wear skirts or dresses.

Men should wear slacks and collared shirts.
