I was serving in the Orangeburg National Guard in 1968 when an unfortunate event took place. This event is referred to as the "Orangeburg Massacre". There is even a special section in the State Musuem in Columbia. The media put its special spin on the story back then and it still makes one race againt another rather than one particular group of society against another.
Why does the leadership of the NAACP feel it is okay to present history from their perspective, but it is not okay for history to be presented the way it really was? The resent fuss over a picture of three, not one, people in period clothing reflects the true nature of the NAACP just as sure as white hoods reflected the nature of the KKK.
It seems that it is more politically correct to present the NAACP spin on an event than it is to question the onesided attitude of the NAACP. History is what it is and though there are periods that are not pretty there it is. It should not be distorted for the sake of being politically correct.
There needs to be better, unprejudice dialogue between the races. Black History Month, the Black Miss America contest and advertisments saying give to the Negro College of your choice does not make that an easy task. I challenge the black community and the white community to see the hate of the past as history rather than holding on to the hate and passing it on to the next generation.
