WASHINGTON (AP) - From its humble beginning 33 years ago at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, the career of Ann E. Dunwoody has ascended to a peak never before reached by a woman in the U.S. military.
Dunwoody became a four-star general Friday in an emotional promotion ceremony in Washington. Dunwoody said her fourth star was a credit to the Army, which gave her a chance to rise through the ranks in a male-dominated military.
She also made history in North Carolina, where she became the 82nd Airborne Division’s first female battalion commander at Fort Bragg.
Dunwoody said when she began her military career, “This is not exactly how I envisioned my life unfolding.“ She told a standing-room-only auditorium she intended to spend two years in the Army to help her pursue a career teaching physical education.
