Going Green With Windows
Go Green Windows
Looking to save money and energy with your windows. This week, we are presenting some special Go Green pieces highlighting a family in the Upstate that recently won an energy makeover for their home.
The Drummond family in Woodruff just received 10,000 dollars to make their house the ultimate Go Green and Save Green. Now we’re going to look around and see what we can be done that could even help you out.
Eric and Melissa Drummond live in the house their parents built back in 1961. “Energy efficiency wasn’t really a consideration at that time,” the Melissa Drummond says.
But now, as we approach the 50th anniversary of the home, being green is more important than ever.
“I care about the environment because my kids have to live here too in the future so I wanted to do something to make it more efficient.”
The Drummonds won the “Help My House” contest which will save them money on their energy bill and save the earth at the same time.
“It’s an older home and the things we are going to show you are common problems in the typical home around the state and there are some things that you can do as you see us do in our project.”
David Hammond with Laurens Electric Co-operative is one of several people who are helping the Drummonds with their energy makeover.
“Windows are something you can do yourself maybe. Even if you don’t replace them all at one time, you know you start with one or two at a time and eventually you will have a tight shell around your house,” explains Hammond.
So, that’s just what they did.
“We’ve just put in new windows at the beginning of this year and that helped because the old ones were very drafty.”
“The goal of this project is to get the energy bill of this house to half of what it is now.”
And now, the Drummonds are on the way to achieving that goal.
