Cherokee County Council Trashes Plan For Landfill…For Now

Cherokee County Council Trashes Plan For Landfill…For Now
» 4 Comments | Post a Comment

A heated battle over whether or not a massive landfill should be built in Cherokee County—on hold.

Earlier Monday night, the County Council voted against moving forward with the plan—for now.

The council voted not to change their current waste management agreement, and are going to let waste management come back with another proposal at a later date. A new discussion will be started.

At issue—a proposed landfill and recycling center in the McKowns Mountain area.

Supporters say the project will create jobs and revenue for the county.

Opponents worry about waste and property values dropping.

Bob Peeler with Waste Management said of the vote, “We’re disappointed in the vote, and we will to fight on We owe it to the citizens in Cherokee County.“

Opponents were happy about the temporary victory, but vowed to continue to fight the project.

Hundreds showed up at the meeting to hear the decision.

Just goes to show that the people in Gaffney STILL don’t get it when it comes to progress.  They just sit back on their holier-than-thou rears and keep things the same as they were 100 years ago.  Just what exactly do they plan to do with their garbage???? Ship it to a neighboring town’s dump.  Better idea - just keep it in your own backyard if you don’t want to progress to a land field.  Grow up people - Gaffney has potential if you old timers can get past “we don’t want change”.  Good luck Bob Peeler and Waste Management - you’re dealing with some people in the sticks worse than Mayberry.

I would suggest that Cherokee County contact Anderson County Council Members Bob Waldrep and Cindy Wilson before deciding.  The former Anderson County Administrator, Joey Ray Preston, pulled off what many called an illegal scheme to get the landfill in our county that most of the county now regret.  If you want Joey Ray Preston back as your administrator contact him.  He has scammed us out of $millions$.

Interesting. People fight against progression and development, yet current needs are not considered.  Our current landFILL (sp) has been closed for many years. it is operating as a transfer station. As of next year we will need a location to dispose of our own waste. Then, we not only have one, but TWO LANDFILLS, one county, and one CITY, both located in the Concord/Grassy Pond Community. Both of which are within a couple hundred feet of our 2 primary drinking water sources, Broad River and Lake Welchel. The county landfill was built when the regulations were not as strict, (if any at all. Wonder if CLOUT will go attack them for polluting Lake Whelchel? Some cant see the forest for the trees.  we already have an issue that is not even been looked at and they are wanting to stop the only chance of survival of Cherokee county has of new businesses moving in. Just today Ruby Tuesday closed up…..What more will it take for us to open our eyes and quit nit-picking about progression and accept what offers we get for bettering ourselves.
