Three Carolinas U.S. Representatives Change Bailout Votes

The massive financial plan to ease the financial crisis will get at least two votes in favor of the package that an earlier version didn’t receive when it was defeated on Monday.

South Carolina 3rd District congressman Gresham Barrett and North Carolina 9th District representative Sue Myrick say they will support the legislation. North Carolina Republican Rep. Howard Coble
says he has changed his mind and will now vote for the $700 billion financial market bailout package.

However, western North Carolina Representative Heath Shuler of the 11th District, will again vote “no” to the bailout plan. Hayden Rogers, Shuler’s Chief of Staff, expects the measure will pass the House. Shuler has said of his opposition of the plan “I hope I’m wrong” according to Rogers.

A representative of Bob Inglis (R-SC) says the vote is expected Friday afternoon.

Economic necessity and tax breaks helped make a $700 billion banking system bailout attractive enough for U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-S.C., to change his “no” vote to a “yes.“

Barrett said Thursday night he plans to vote for the package Friday. Barrett was the only member of the South Carolina delegation voting against it last week.

North Carolina Republican Representative Sue Myrick says she is changing her vote to “yes” on the $700 million financial market bailout package.

Myrick said in a statement Friday that she is going to vote in favor of the revised plan, four days after joining with a majority in the House who voted down the package.

Republicans and Democrats alike said appeals from credit-starved small businessmen and the Senate’s addition of 110 billion dollars in tax breaks had persuaded them to drop their opposition.

Vote-counters in both parties need to come up with a dozen or so supporters to reverse Monday’s stunning defeat of the 700 billion dollar measure.
