Report: Welfare Rolls In South Carolina Climb 23%

More South Carolinians are headed to the welfare rolls in this recession, The ‘Wall Street Journal’ reported an increase of 23% in the Palmetto State in the last year. Oregon saw a 27% increase. In South Carolina, most welfare funding is being directed to the cash assistance program which advocates say does little to help people find jobs and get off the system.
Despite the recession, a few states like Michigan have declining welfare rolls. Groups for the poor claim red tape may keep people from asking for help.
