280 Firefighters Trying To Contain Pisgah National Forest Wildfire
MARION, N.C. (AP) - Nearly 300 firefighters from four states are working to contain a wildfire in western North Carolina that has burned more than 800 acres.
The Asheville-Citizen Times reported Tuesday the fire in Pisgah National Forest was about 50 percent contained.
U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Deborah Walker said the fire could grow to as many as 2,000 acres later this week as crews plan a backfire to prevent the fire from advancing.
Firefighters from Idaho, Arkansas and Oklahoma are helping local crews fight the blaze. The fire is burning north of Marion in McDowell County.
Farther west in Haywood County, 88 firefighters have fully contained a fire that burned 425 acres.
