Am not sure where you are located in reference to Laurens/Liberty. I’ve worked in rescue in SC for 9 years; the best alternative in helping these animals is to contact the local animal shelter in Anderson!!

And WRITE Letters to the local newspaper!! I am also sure that there are rescue groups in the Upstate who are also trying to help…If you can foster, adopt, transport etc, CALL shelter
I had contacted Bird Dog Rescue (THEIR group) in the past and had people contact me regarding emailing them re dogs available on their petfinder website with NO response. Their site has been taken down on petfinder!!

Yes gaillusk you are correct in your assesment of Animal shelters. I guess they have no choice due to space etc. but animals are only held a few days and if not adopted they are euthanized. I believe it is only 3 to 5 days in most places. Also any animal brought in or picked up that appears the least bit sick or wild is put down immediately. And what animal..cat especially..would not be scared?? Add to that the minimal hours they are open for adoptions and the high fees they charge..only a very very few escape the death penalty. It is so sad!
Well Matt, this would be in my neck of the woods however, I am not familiar with that particular area. If I see it, I will certainly report it. If these people can not support the animals they are doing more harm than good trying to keep too many.
Gaillusk, let us know what you find on your trip to Laurens. I am at work and can not possibly try to find the place until afterwards. It makes me sick to see an animal mistreated!!
This really makes me sick, I am an animal lover and I have taken in cats that doesn’t have a home. I guess that is why I am Kitty cat. I think that there should be MORE action taken against people that actually are mean to animals. It is really sad. And it breaks my heart.
Thank you Matt. I had already put the streets in my GPS and got a general idea of where you were talking about. I think I have been close to that location before when I traveled off of interstate 26 into Laurens to get gas. I am heading down that way today to see whats up. I have thought about your post all weekend. I too am an animal advocate. Anytime I see a dog tied up to a tree without a dog house or proper food and water I will call animal control. I am a bit leary of Animal Shelters because from my understanding if an animal isn’t adopted within a certain amount of time they are euthanized? Fell free to correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again Matt
gaillusk, On highway 221 turn onto Beattie St. (right beside Verdins Feed and Seed) Go down Beattie St about 1/4 mile, and it turns into Conway Ave. The puppy Mill is right there on the Right. The back yard is right at the road. There is 50 year old tarps with holes in them covering up the dogs. Last time I went by, there was more dogs than you could count.
I’m making a trip to Laurens today!!!
felix, my husband and I feel the same way you do. One day, we would love to visit Best Friends like yourself. You know that Best Friends didn’t get started by a rich person. It was a group of people that pooled their resources and talents together, their sole mission has been to put an end to homeless animals and they’ve been quiet successful. Yes we need a sanctuary on the East Coast, if there were enough people interested in this endeavor we too, could start a fight for animal welfare. If anyone is interested please count me in.
The police are not going to do anything about it unless someone complains about it. That is the same way with animal control. There first has to be a complaint made. If no one complains they do nothing in most cases. In fact, I once rescued 4 cats that a police officer had moved off and left shut up in a mobile home in the middle of summer…animals don’t seem to be a priority of theirs to say the least.
I havent been over to Laurens in a while. But this place is right along the roadside. The police see it like everyone else. It has been there for years. It always comes to mind when I see a story like this.
