An Asheville High School quarterback is changing lives one pass at a time.
Brandon Whiteside is donating $1 for every passing yard this season, “So say it’s 100 yards, that’s $100.“
So far this season Whiteside is already up to 547 yards. That’s $547 out of his pocket.
Whiteside says he started off working as a janitor, “My second job was with my stepfather moving furniture and stuff.“
The money he is raising is going to cancer research. He says, “Cancer has been in my family.“
His sister, grandfather and his mother have all been stricken with the disease.
17-year veteran Asheville High School football coach Danny Wilkins says, “Cancer comes in a lot of forms. He doesn’t have a lot of funds so this is a sacrifice for him to do what he’s doing.“
A sacrifice off the field this quarterback didn’t tell a single teammate about until word spread.
Coach Wilkins says, “We’ve got players and coaches that found out and they’re making donations to help him out.“
And it might get expensive, because it turns out number nine is going for a record, “At the end of last year I was at 1400 yards short of the career passing record.”
The Asheville High School football team takes the field again Friday against Inka in their homecoming game.
Whiteside says he will wait until his final tally at the end of the season and make one big donation then.
