  Janice Mabry with Jan Michael Salon in Spartanburg has been a hair stylist for more than 40 years.  She says it’s the job of a lifetime. Mabry says, “It is a very rewarding job.  I have a lot of lifetime friends.  I dearly love my customers and I love my job too.“  For people wanting to get into the hair styling business, you don’t need a college degree.  She says, “You have to go to beauty school and take 1500 hours and then you get a license and build a clientele.“  Experts say you can go from $20,000 to start to almost $35,000 within the first four years.  According to Careerbuilder.com, retail sales are another good job that doesn’t require a degree.  You can earn an average of $24,000.  Then there’s a medical assistant that performs administrative tasks.  You are usually trained on the job and can make about $30,000 a year. Electricians do well too. You will need long term job training because of the hazards, but it is well worth it because you can make up to $50,000 a year.“  Also on the list is automotive technicians.  You will have to get a vocational certification, but with these jobs in demand you can command an average of $37,000 annually.
    On the road at number six is truck drivers.  There’s moderate training involved but you will need a good driving record.  Hauling a big rig will get you about $36,000 a year to start and there is room to increase.
    Finally who wouldn’t want to be around good food.  Restaurant cooks can start at about $21,000 a year. there is long term on the job training.
  According to Mabry, you don’t have to have a degree to have a fulfilling and lucrative career.
She says, “I made out pretty good.  I raised three children doing this.“
