Another Shooting in Gaffney
Published: July 5, 2009
A man found Saturday night in Gaffney died of natural causes, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler. The man has been identified as 53 year old James Thomas McGaha of North Limestone Street.
“A passerby spotted Mr. McGaha lying partially on the sidewalk near the intersection of East Robinson and North Petty Streets about 12:20 a.m. and called 9-1-1,” Fowler said in a press release.
An autopsy was performed this morning in Newberry in order to assist with my investigation and to rule out any foul play. Fowler stressed, “Mr.McGaha’s death is not connected to the five homicides that have occurred over the past 7 days in Cherokee County.“

Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner says this killing is not related to the serial killings and more information will be available after an autopsy is performed. Sources tell News Channel 7 that the person looked ‘beaten up”.

Good grief, it appears Gaffney is falling apart.
If this murder is related or not… hopefully the serial killer will meet an untimely end, thus saving the taxpayers the expense and drama of the court room and 15 years worth of appeals which would follow.
Hopefully the police or a Cherokee County resident will get a round in him. The only justice I see in all of this would be if it was not instant, instead he had to flop around a bit gut shot before expiring.
Hi Sheila! If the people who are now packing are smart, once this awful ordeal is over, they will CONTINUE to pack. I live near Columbia, which is larger, has a larger population, and therefore, more crime in general than Gaffney. I have had a chance to observe trends in crime and violent criminals for many years.
One aspect of human nature regarding crime trends that never ceases to amaze and worry me, is how quickly most people return to “normal” mode once a notorious bad guy or group of bad guys is incarcerated or otherwise out of circulation. You can have a serial, robber, rapist, or murderer, making the rounds and everyone is rightfully frightened while this miscreant(s) is out and about and doing their thing. People become aware of their surroundings, carry mace, carry a firearm, make sure doors to their homes and cars are locked, watch more closely over their children and other loved ones, and many other things which tend to keep themselves and their loved ones safer.
Once the bad guy is apprehended or otherwise out of circulation, within 24 hours or less, most revert to the same patterns they were in before the notorious criminal threat began. They cease to keep weapons close at hand, they become unaware of their surroundings, they become less watchful of children and other loved ones, they become sloppy about keeping doors locked, etc.
While a certain amount of “relaxation” from the heightened alert status is desired and desirable, you don’t want to let your guard down too far. As I have said for years, just because right now’s “crud du jour” is off the streets, it doesn’t mean there are not quite a few standing in line to take his place.
In fact, there will always be more in line to take the place of the previous societal worry. You may not have heard from him yet because he hasn’t been “set off” by the girl who jilted him. The wrong combination of drugs and / or alcohol hasn’t created the chemical imbalance in his brain. Perhaps he hasn’t been released from jail after stewing about why he thinks it is society’s fault he was in there rather than his own for the life choices that led him there.
The thing is, even in small towns, but more so in larger ones, every day you rub shoulders with people who may have committed some really horrendous crimes or are going to be committing them in the near future. You may not know it but they are there, none the less. You encounter them in the convenience store, on the street, in the grocery store, and many other places.
When the next serial robber, rapist, or murderer, starts their rampage, there is ALWAYS a first victim, second victim, and even a third or more victim BEFORE people realize there is a major problem in the area. For these victims and their families, the horror of this all is 100%. It is not diminished just because there weren’t half a dozen or more other victims of this same creep preceding them.
It is exceedingly rare that you will see me without a firearm on my person and never, that you will see me without one at least a short stroll away to the car. Having lost friends to murderers while in my early and mid teens and having observed these trends, I know the bad things that can and do happen to good people when they are not prepared to deal with them.
While I know that everyone wants this to be over and will rightfully breathe a sigh of relief when it is, I still would urge awareness that this one crud is NOT the only one that is out there in this world. There are plenty more to go around, unfortunately.
My prayers go out to the family’s and friends of the victims. I was thinking about the description and they are saying that this man has big bright blue eyes…eyes fade on most people as they age, you can however buy color contacts. This would make it easy for him to throw people off on the description…please keep that in mind when you are thinking that you know someone that looks like him but doesn’t have blue eyes. (just a thought) God bless you all and please keep praying for the safety of everyone in Cherokee Co and that he is STOPPED very soon.
another thing i want to put out there is that the killer is close to being caught so just by looking at his picture and some of the military skills that i learn in the army…go to truck stops cause he want to be discreet so norman’s truck stop is a good spot because it’s near the highway and it’s around alot of white men who could possibly look something like him. if u think outside of the box u could find him. they are getting so many tips in columbia about how some people see him. look into please don’t let this man continue.
You know that it’s bad when the people of Gaffney are packing guns everywhere that they go in fear of running into the killer.I pray that this NUT will be found soon and the small town of Gaffney can get back to normal. But what scares me is The South Carolina Peach Festival coming up in just a few days. I hope and Pray that they catch him before then,or everybody will be packing lead there too. Pray people Pray…
I dont know this for sure but im thinking maybe the person that did it was arrested. Maybe he was on scene and confessed? But then again we are in Gaffney and I doubt thats how it happened, but thats the only way I know that they could completely rule it out.
Wonder how exactly they know it wasn’t related?
We will all stand UNITED in this tragedy. We will rise with the voices of the FATAL. We will all come together and piece the puzzle. We all have eyes and ears. May GOD be with all the forces in their search. To all the families my thoughts are with you.

Im the same way Hootie! My 9 yr old wants to know why she cant go out to play, I tell her cause I want her to be close to me. She also wanted to know how come we didnt shoot our fireworks this year as we have done every other year in the past. So I explained that We shouldnt shoot them out of respect for the families who have lost loved ones and for the police who are working so hard. You cant tell the difference between gun fire and fire works. This is just sad and the kids have a hard time understanding. I must say I also hope I wouldnt know someone so evil.
What is wrong with the people in Gaffney??? As if it isnt bad enough with all the other killings somebody has to do something like this!!!!! Maybe I should just leave town until all this is over!
