SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright wants to temporarily cut his officers’ pay instead of giving them six unpaid days off as part of county budget cuts.
County Administrator Glenn Breed ordered the county’s 1,400 employees to take a six-day furlough to help close a $5.4 million hole in the budget.
Breed couldn’t order cost-saving measures at the sheriff’s office because the sheriff is elected, but said county employees could be laid off if the sheriff’s office didn’t participate.
Wright told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg that he didn’t want to see anyone laid off, so he agreed to temporarily cut six days of pay for almost all officers over the next five months. A starting deputy making $27,500 will lose about $50 a paycheck until June 30.

Hey! I hear that District 7 has a surplus of money to waste on a golf course, that has since been put on hold, couldn’t we the taxpayers just vote to divert that money to the safety and security of Spartanburg by giving it to the Sheriff’s Office instead?
