Child Hit By Car Outside Woodland Heights Elementary; Driver Charged

A 4th-grader was hit by a car as she crossed the street on her way to school at Woodland Heights Elementary l in Spartanburg, and the driver is facing charges of failure to yield.  Spartanburg Public Safety the driver didn’t stop for the crossing guard around 7:20 Tuesday morning in at the corner of John B. White Sr. Boulevard at Savoy Street in Spartanburg.   

As Charles Logan looks at the damage done to his car, he can only think about the little girl he hit on her way to school.  Logan told News Channel 7, “I know the physical scars will feel.  I’m a little bit worried about the emotional scars.“  Spartanburg Public Safety says the Woodland Heights student stepped into the crosswalk and was struck by the mirror on Logan’s car during morning rush-hour.  The crossing guard said she was allowing a bus to turn and told the other drivers in both directions to stop.  Logan says he thought he could go when the bus did.  When he did, he says he heard a quiet thump, pulled his car around the corner and says he ran back to see what he had hit.  According to Logan, “I picked her up and I stayed with her until the ambulance came, which was very fast by the way…. She was very brave. She is actually the heroine out of all of this.

This crossing guard was not permitted to talk to us on camera but says she has been directing traffic on this corner since 1963 and it’s the first time anything like this has ever happened…

The school district says the girl suffered a broken bone near her ankle, and that the accident is a reminder to all of us to be careful when traveling through school zones.  According to Spartanburg District 6 School District spokesperson Cynthia Robinson, “We hate that it even happened at all, but we are glad that she is ok, that she’s still alive.“  Logan says, “I feel relieved.  I feel relieved that I did not hurt her any more seriously than I already did.“

Update 11:31 a.m.

Charles H. Logan Junior, 28, of Spartanburg was charged with failure to yield the right of way for a pedestrian according to Spartanburg Public Safety. the fine for that offense is $149.

Update 9:20 a.m.
Cynthia Robinson with Spartanburg School District 6 says the child was a female 4th grader at Woodland Heights.  After examination at the hospital the girl has a broken bone near her ankle.

Captain Randy Hardy with Spartanburg Public Safety says the driver of the car has been charged with failure to yield right of way for a pedestrian.

A child was hit Tuesday morning in front of Woodland Heights Elementary School in Spartanburg according to Spartanburg Public Safety.  Investigators tell News Channel 7 a driver failed to stop for the crossing guard at the crosswalk at 1216 John B. White Senior Boulevard.  Captain Randy Hardy says the child was hit by the mirror on the car and suffered minor cuts and abrasions.  The child was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
