Mother of Toddler Killed In Crash Talks About Accident

» 12 Comments | Post a Comment

The mother of a toddler who was killed - after she was thrown from a car is speaking out to News Channel 7.
She tells us 2-year-old Destiny Smith was sitting in between 2 carseats buckled in.  One carseat flipped up and an infant flew out the back window.  Destiny was not ejected according to her mom… Her head was crushed by the door.  She says she tried to give her daughter CPR before the ambulance arrived.

Greenville Police say the crash happened around 9:30 Tuesday morning at the intersection of Pendleton and Academy Streets in Greenville.

All of those who survived the deadly crash are out of the hospital according to the Coroners office.

Greenville Police say they found that baby’s car seat on the ground—and next to it—the baby—who’s about 3 to 6 months old.

Corporal Jason Rampey with the Greenville Police Department said, “It is a grim reminder that it is the law to use child restraints and child safety seats and when you use them, make sure you use them properly- that they’re properly secure in the vehicle and the infant or child is properly secured inside the car seat.“

Greenville Police are looking into whether speed and distraction played a part in causing the crash.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether or not any charges will be filed against any of the drivers.

Tuesday night, we heard from Destiny’s family.

In a statement, a woman claiming to be the sister in law of the victim’s mother told us:

“Destiny will be missed and she was a very smart and pretty little girl. We love her and will see her again one day.“

Destiny’s mother tells us the children were going with friends to get their ears pierced, when the crash happened.  She says Destiny was buckled between two car seats.  Her mother says Destiny was not ejected, and she tried to give her CPR before the ambulance arrived.

No matter what happened with the whole situation this mother is in pain. I think that we as community should come together and support the family. None of this was Destiny’s fault. I lost my 2 year old son in the beginning of this year. I still have not gotten over that and neither will this mother. No matter what she loved that child and we should let her at least be able to bury her child in peace. She is suffering enough without people judging her. I pray for her and all Destiny’s family during this time that God may heal their pain, and that they realize that Destiny is ok and in a happier, much better place.

You are so right and only a mother who has lost a child or a grandmother who has lost a grandchild understands that pain.  I am one.  I pray God will hold her very close during all the coming days.

The important thing to remember is this mother has lost a child. I hope she can find peace over it, but it is still terible.

I agree with you walkersranger.  We do make snap jusgements many times.  The mother stated in the article above that the child that was killed was not thrown from the car but the door smashed her head.  The toddler had been sitting between the two babies and was buckled in.  This is so very sad.

We comment on these stories and make judgement calls, but it seems to me that there is not enough information to really say what happened. I can’t see a mother strapping one child in and not the other. Just not enough information here. I guess I’ll have to get the accident report and read it for a complete story.

Very well said Cha4 and mrsadt. This family will have to live with this mistake their whole life. I can not imagine the guilt this mother feels.

I have known some 2 yr olds to unbuckle their car seats. Kids are smart these days. She could have unbuckled the mother noticed and was trying to get her to buckle back up. This distraction could have been what caused the accident. I am sometimes to quick to pass judgment also but never the less someone lost a child today. No one no matter what mistakes they made should have to feel that kind of pain. If it was the mothers fault I think she feels enough guilty and pain without strangers adding to it. I too pray for the family!

I would like to know how it is so easy for some to sit in judgement of this child’s mother!  Of course it is easy to presume that you know this woman or that she is careless.  Parents sometimes make mistakes.  This was a terrible accident and tragedy that struck this family this morning!I will continue to pray for this family and hope that others will do the same.

You know what really makes me sick??!!?? Many parents will read this tonight. Those parents will get up in the morning throw the kids in the car with out any restraints and take off. Just like this driver did this morning.

News stated older child was not buckled up. I believe the driver of the dead child will be charged in this death. It is the law to have your child properly restrained. Had these children been they might both be unharmed right now.
