A woman has been arrested and charged with murder after a stabbing early Sunday morning in Gaffney.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s investigators arrested 50-year old Patricia Sprouse after she allegedly stabbed a man at a residence on Marietta Road. Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as 48-year old Michael William Carpenter, of 131-B Marietta Road in Gaffney.

In a prepared release, Fowler said that Carpenter sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest during an altercation at the residence around 5:30 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The victim and a reported live-in girlfriend were reportedly arguing when the incident escalated to violence,“ Fowler said. “A female suspect was taken into custody at the scene by Sheriff’s authorities.“

An autopsy will be performed Monday in Newberry to assist with the investigation.
