COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Travel vouchers show South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford charged the state $131 for mileage to drive from his family’s plantation in Beaufort County to Columbia for a news conference.
The travel vouchers were obtained from the comptroller general’s office by The State newspaper for a story Thursday.
Sanford traveled to the Dec. 31 news conference to discuss a compromise with the Employment Security Commission over a federal loan to help pay unemployment benefits.
Federal tax rules don’t allow someone to be reimbursed for traveling from home to work. But governor’s spokesman Ben Fox says the Lowcountry plantation is not Sanford’s official home.
