Governor Sanford Convenes Panel To Address Unemployment

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Governor Mark Sanford has put together a round-table meeting to discuss the state’s unemployment agency and handle a shortfall of as much as $1 billion in covering jobless benefits.
Sanford’s panel meets Tuesday in Columbia.
Meanwhile, the Legislature plans to return to Columbia for a one-day session next week to make sure the state’s unemployed qualify for an extra seven weeks of emergency checks. Legislators blame the Employment Security Commission for that and say the agency has to be overhauled.
Legislation was introduced to make changes to the commission this year. Lawmakers rejected the bill when it came to the House floor and sent it back to a committee.
