Hillcrest High Teacher Killed in Morning Motorcycle Crash

A community is remembering a Hillcrest High School teacher—killed Wednesday morning in a motorcycle crash on Boiling Springs Road.

MedTrans transported 25-year-old Troy Jones to Greenville Memorial Hosptial shortly after 8 in the morning. He died around 11:30 am, of blunt force trauma. Jones was a math teacher at Hillcrest.  Principal, Steve Chamness says, “We didn’t know what had happened.  Troy was a teacher who was always there on time, and rarely missed a day.  At 8:20, he had not reported to school, and had not called in.“

The Highway Patrol tells News Channel 7 that Jones’ motorcycle went off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, and threw Jones off the bike. He was wearing a helmet.

Chamness calls Jones an “energetic” young teacher who had a gift for connecting with kids.  “Because he was a young teacher, he had the ability to interact maybe at a different level with the kids.  They really enjoyed Mr. Jones.“

Extra grief counselors were on hand Wednesday at Hillcrest to help students deal with the loss.  Chamness says, “There was one young boy who was very upset.  He said, Mr. Jones always told us we could do anything we felt like we could do.  Anything we set our mind to, we could achieve that.“

Jones was just in his second year of teaching.  He leaves behind a wife, whom he just married last year.

Sad. I don’t even have the words to say to express how bad I feel for him and his family. My prayers are with you all.

Mr. Jones was an extraordinary teacher, and he will be missed. I can say without a doubt that he was my favorite teacher. He made school fun and he was a great person.
