A Louisiana Justice Of The Peace who landed in hot water last month, after refusing to marry an interracial couple, has now resigned.
This, after the couple brought a federal discrimination lawsuit against former Justice Keith Bardwell.
Beth Humphrey and Terence Mckay—who were later married by another justice—say Bardwell violated the equal protection clause under the 14th
amendment.
Bardwell says he wouldn’t marry the couple, because he felt it would hurt the upbringing of their children. He also has said he doesn’t feel he did anything wrong.
The bride, Beth Humphrey, lived in Greenville County, where her parents remain.
She and her new husband plan to return to the Upstate to celebrate their vows in a few months.
We spoke with her mother about the recent developments.
Lynda Humphrey said, “They were upset that he didn’t say that he had done wrong.“
She continued, “He shouldn’t let his personal racism get in the way of him doing his job.“
She says the couple was shocked at the way they were treated, and hope the case prevents something similar from happening again.

God does not see color! We are not animals, even though we act like it sometimes.
Those are my feelings also about interracial marriages pw. I think the Bible was speaking more about the “other gods” than the skin color. I believe I would rather have my child or sister marry a black Christian than a white man from some non-christian faith.
Moses had a black wife and when his siter Miriam made fun of Moses ( who was the meekest man on earth) she was struck with leprosy. He had to pray for God to remove it. The thing is…although I am not sure about inter-racial marriage…we can not say it is against the Bible because the reason God told Israel not to marry out of their race was because of the other gods the other nations worshipped. I have never read in the Bible that it was wrong. If it is there, please show me.
I don’t know what the habits of birds are….and I do believe in God, and did not say I was all out in favor of mixed marriages. I personally do not think it is the best idea around to marry outside your own race but it isn’t illegal, and I do not have the right to tell someone else they can’t do it.
Red birds don’t nest with blue birds, cows don’t breed with goats, ect. Humans are the only creature in GODS world that cross breed. My bible does not say this is right. If you don’t belive in GOD and when you die and there is one “opps to late”.
As long as they are over 18, one is male and the other female, I see no reason to refuse to marry them.
