Two Laurens County ladies were named Miss South Carolina and Miss Teen South Carolina Saturday night at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.
Miss Hartsville, Kelly Sloan was crowned as Miss South Carolina. The 24-year old Gray Court resident sang “For Once In My Life” and was rewarded with a $15,000 cash scholarship.
Meanwhile, 17-year old Ali Rogers was named Miss Teen South Carolina. Rogers, who was Miss Teen Laurens, won a preliminary talent competition for playing her rendition of “In The Mood” on the piano. She was awarded with a $5,000 savings bond and will compete in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Competition in Orlando, Florida in August.
Sloan will compete at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas in January.

I think that there is way more important things to worry about. First of all, Mrs. Sloan was a great teacher to my son; he loves her. She is a teacher and chose to give her gift to the children of Laurens county, because she taught in a local elementary school. I’m happy for her. She sets a good example for young people, because she continued to follow her dreams, and didn’t give up until she won. Great job Mrs. Sloan!!!
I noticed that our new so called “queen” didn’t make the same mistake that the beautiful Miss California did and stand up for what is right…instead she chose to be “politically correct” in her answer about Sanford’s escapades! Probably figured that answer would take her further than saying he should resign. Or maybe she’s just that dumb…beauty queens aren’t noted for their brains, now are they?
If nothing matters in the beauty contests I would like for Miss California, Carrie Prejean, to come and represent South Carolina in the Miss USA, World, etc. She is talented, beautiful, intellingent and carries a conservative flag. She gets my vote for sure! Al Brown
Yea, I think it’s silly too. You should at least be required to be a current resident of the county. This means that the same dozens of women can now just travel around the state participating in dozens of pageants until each one wins one.
What’s the point of having local representation compete in the Miss South Carolina pagents if they don’t even come from those communities? If they want to allow that, then they might as well just scrap all those local pagents and just have one big Miss South Carolina pagent that anyone from the state can enter. The little commmunities displayed across their chests are completely pointless.
no its not silly. the perliminaary is to get the best girls possible to represent Miss SC for the a chance to be Miss USA you all need to read the Miss SC rules and regulations.
Sounds kind of silly to me, the way Miss Hartsville can represent Laurens. Hartsville is near Florence on the other side of the state.
It’s about time something positive is reported about Laurens County. Congratulations to both women that won. Now lets go win Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen!
first of all you need to know that as long as you are a SC resident you can enter any prelininary pageant for any of the counties in sc and it dont matter if you live in that county,as long as you are a resident of SC and you can enter more than one prelim. pageant if they are 45 you can enter as many as you want up until you win. So get a life and quit whining about she didn’t live in that county and she represented myrtle beach in 2005 evidently she must be doing something right because she is the MISS SC WAY TO GO GIRL!
Ok, so how did a Gray Court resident win Miss Hartsville?? Is she a Coker student or something? And is this the same Kelly Sloan that represented North Myrtle Beach in the 2005 pageant?
