Man Found Dead In Oconee County, Arrest Made

**Thursday 3:00 p.m. Update**

Oconee County Coroner Karl E. Addis say an autopsy was performed Thursday on Walt Wilbanks. The autopsy showed Willbanks died from a single, shotgun wound to his chest.  Addis says the death is classified as a homicide.

**Thursday 10:35am Update**

Oconee County authorities late Wednesday afternoon charged Yates Walter Wyant, 59, of Mountain Rest with the shooting death of Walt Wilbanks, 70, of Mountain Rest.

That’s being reported by our coverage partners at The Independent-Mail.

News Channel 7 has confirmed Wyant is being held in the Oconee County Detention Center.

On Thursday autopsy results are due out in the killing of a man in Oconee County. The coroner’s office said officers found 70-year-old Walt Wilbanks dead in a truck with the engine still running off Whetstone Road in Mountain Rest.

The coroner said he had a gunshot wound to the chest and the case was being investigated as a murder.
