NewsChannel 7 visited this city in the Midlands Tuesday night to speak to residents about the news that has centered on their community.

Most told us they are not panicking, but are concerned. It is certainly the talk of Newberry.

We found a group of public school teachers who told us they have been told to be on the lookout for symptoms in students.

We found young mothers concerned about their young children catching the flu. And residents who are just worried.

“Frankly…it scares me to death…its something you expect other places…you really don’t expect it to be here,“ one resident said.

We also learned, Newberry Academy School held its prom this past weekend. Some of the sick students who were there, came in contact with other young people.

We also talked with a young man who said he socialized with the group of students on the Mexico trip after they came back, and he has since been suffering from the symptoms, and is now wearing a protective mask, per DHEC.

Newberry Academy has canceled school until May 4th because of concerns that some students who became ill after a trip to Mexico may have swine flu.
Softball and baseball games have also been canceled.

Lab test conducted by the Department of Health and Environmental Control show that two of the flu cases at the school tested “probable” for swine flu.

The samples have been sent to the CDC for more testing.

The school advises parents of students to contact the school if their children developed flu like symptoms over the weekend.

I am in complete agreement with Hivy24-We should stop all travel until this thing is under control.  It seems to be spreading everywhere and people are being exposed when they do not even realize it.  The article of the child’s death in Texas brought tears.

Regardless of where it came from. Point is that it’s here and it’s affecting our children. I think proper percautions would be that the US should take and test every child and see if they are carrying the germ. There has already been one death of a young child, we don’t need anymore. My son was sick with some of the similar symptoms and I took him to the hospital hoping they would check him and they wouldn’t. All they would do is give antibiotics. Also they need to stop people from traveling until we resolve this issue.

How about the Nameless Flu?  Or the 70’s Flu?  Or HERE IT IS AGAIN FLU??
Actually I think it should stay the SWINE FLU….that is what it has always been known as.

This just in: We can’t call it the “swine flu”. Pork producers are upset. Israel wants to call it the “Mexico flu”. Mexico says it started here in the US, so don’t name it after them! I wanted to call it something Politically Correct, like the P.C. Flu, but Pres. College is already protesting! What do we call it? I need your suggestions: http://www.975wcos.com/pages/Jonathonrush.html
