COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A New York man shown on dashcam video being kicked in the head by a South Carolina state trooper has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to leading authorities on the chase that prompted the traffic stop.
Prosecutor Ed Clements says Sergio Caridi of Greene County, N.Y., was sentenced to three years in a prison mental hospital Thursday after entering the plea to assaulting a law enforcement officer and failing to stop.
Caridi was arrested after authorities say he led law enforcement officers on a 30-mile chase in a dump truck down Interstate 95 in 2006.
The video of the incident shows a trooper appearing to kick Caridi in the head. The trooper, John B. Sawyer, pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights charge in June and was sentenced to three years probation.
