African American Leaders Insulted By Dist 7 Policy on President’s Speech

Rep. Harold Mitchell, Jr.

» 21 Comments | Post a Comment

State Representative Harold Mitchell rallied Tuesday morning in front of Spartanburg County District 7 offices, along with other city and county board members.

All Spartanburg county districts say they plan to record the Presiden’ts speech and work it into lesson plans if they choose.

District 7 parents have the choice of whether their child sees the address.

Some African-american leads including Mitchel say it’s insulting to not allow children to participate.

Rep. Mitchell says, “the president is doing nothing but giving an encouraging speech to students who we feel this speech should be heard not only by the kids in the schools, not only district 7, but throughout the state of South Carolina.“

The President’s speech drew criticism early on, because people feared his message would be political.

I love how the “Black Leaders” seem to only be heard from when something is an issue that they can play the race card or cry fowl. If these cry babies would spend half of their time going after actual issues that need dealing with rather than their own perceived injustices, the world would be a much better place.

I think if the parents wanted there child to hear it. They would let them watch it at home with there child..People should not make things about race but that’s just an easy way out for most people!!!

I really think its rediculous for so much controversy over a speech. People are upset because they thought that this will be a political speech. Would it really have made that much of a difference if it was? There are alot of hidden political issues addressed in shows like spongebob, hannah montana, and suite life on deck….should we ban our children from watchin those shows too? I felt like this was more of a motivational speech (similar to a father-to-child first day pep talk). Motivation is something ALL students need. You can do you best to keep your kids from watching this, but i guarantee you the first chance they get, 85% of those who missed it will youtube it and watch it anyway. I seriously think there are bigger fish to fry then this. (eg. MARK SANFORD) Only in SC!!

Mitchell is an antagonist.

My children are all grown and I still don’t want them listening to “The One from Kenya”.

It’s all about his politics not his race.

He is as much white as he is black.  Even more so, since he was raised by his white mother and her family.

The Vice-President of Education was also the principal of the Middle and High School.

Never second guess whetheryou could’ve done more. Just like you said for the kid’s lives you know you touched, whn they say thank you. Others may not have gotten a chance to say thank you. Just know you made a difference in their lives….THATS ENOUGH SAID RIGHT THERE !!!!.....have a great afternoon

No, I inever worked there.  I was secretary to the vice-president of education at a large private school.  My job was more than a regular school secretarys would have been.  I was also a confident too the students whom I still see from time to time and get bug hugs from.  It really makes you feel good when you see the students you worked with and encourage do really well in life….and on the other hand those who do not, bring a sadness to the heart.  You always wonder if you could have done more to help them.

I wrote the last comment I made too fast…too many errors for someone who has worked in the school system.  However, you asked if I were in Spartanburg district…no, but one of my grandchildren is.  I appreciate the schools.
