Report Shows South Carolina Ranks Low on Gun Laws
Published: August 6, 2009
South Carolina is a gun buyer’s haven, according to a report from the Brady Center.
The report shows South Carolina as one of the weakest gun law states in the nation. Part of the reason, according to the report, is because South Carolina does not require a waiting period or have a limit on monthly gun purchases.
Spartanburg Public Safety confiscated 85 guns between January 2008 and August of 2008.
Right now, they have more than 175 guns in the evidence room scheduled to be destroyed.
Spartanburg Public Safety has one investigator completely dedicated to gun crimes. “I think people would be shocked to know the amount of guns out on the street at any one time, There is a lot of people walking around with guns,“ Lieutenant Ron Cantrell said.
Tommy Cato with Morgan Square Pawn says most of his customers are hunters, but he still worries the wrong person may come into his shop. “You just have to be real careful, because when you do sell a gun and it gets in the wrong hands, you’re morally obligated,” he said.

A few years ago Australia banned all firearms except for a few small caliber hunting rifles. In the next two years violent crimes increased 39%. In the US over 80% of all crimes involving guns are committed by people using stolen or otherwise illegal guns and mostly by convicted felons who cannot legally own a gun in the first place. Take away the law abiding citizen’s right to defend themselves and it is a proven fact that crimes will increase. Also another fact. Less than 1/10 of 1% of all violent crimes in the US are committed by CWP holders who legally carry guns. Next to law enforcement CWP holders are the best friends the public has out there.
SC has pretty good gun laws IMO. Keep in mind that this report comes from the Brady camp, who would outright ban handguns if they got their way, along with “assault” weapons. Here in SC it is very easy for someone with a clean criminal record to obtain the firearms that they would like, as it should be. On the other hand, for someone who has a disqualifying factor in their criminal record, they must obtain a gun illegally. This is just not going to happen at a licensed gun shop, as their federal firearms license is much to valuable to risk loosing by not following protocol. Lets face it, any person who is willing to commit a gun crime, presumably murder or armed robbery or something of that nature, is already going to be facing very severe penalties…...making the small penalty for illegal possession of a firearm pretty small beans overall. By having firearms purchase laws that aren’t a real pain in the neck for the rest of us, people who are not current gun owners but would like to be have the ability to defend themselves if they choose to do so.
...EVERYDAY a law-abiding citizen (per the NRA) goes on a shooting rampage?! First off, that’s a load of crap. The vast majority of gun related crimes are done by those who illegally obtained their guns (who are also the VAST minority of gun owners). The Brady bill didn’t do the slightest bit of good to reduce crime, the waiting period doesn’t have any effect, CA’s capacity restrictions don’t seem to be doing anything - how long do we have to feel that our Constitutional right to bear arms and the God-given right to self-preservation and protection are in danger? GUN CONTROL LAWS DO NOT WORK and have bombed, time after time after time. Wake up.
come on up to my house at lake bowen are try to get me out of my car or truck.Ill show you how to use gun control.
What we are forgetting is this: A crook is a crook and a crook can always get a gun. No matter what the laws are. Do you really think that crooks walk into gun shops and legally buy their guns and register them? No, that is what the law abiding citizens do.
Check the laws alerady on the books. Anyone purchasing a firearm from a licensed dealer in this state must pass a federal background check. There are also severe penalties for anyone who unlawfully purchases a firearm, whether it is from a licensed dealer or an individual. I guess people who are already criminals or are planning on being a criminal do not care about the laws in place.
Consider the source of this liberal drivel.
YEs, SC needs stricter gun control laws. Anyone can buy a gun here, no questions asked. Everyday a so called “law abiding citizen per the NRA)“ takes their gun(s) and goes on a rampage killing innocent bystanders, family members, and anytone else they thing has wronged them. We are living in the wild wild west here and our legislators are capitulating to the NRA lobby.
