GARDEN CITY, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say two 11-year-old South Carolina boys were rescued from the Atlantic Ocean after a rip current swept them under a pier.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported Saturday that 18-year-old Travis Harrison rescued Devan Berger and his friend, Christopher Carpenter, as they clung to pilings of the Garden City Beach pier.
Harrison said he was riding his boogie board Friday when he heard their screams for help, swam over and pulled them in.
Devan’s father, Mark Berger, said he and several bystanders were trying to reach the boys, but the current was too strong. The boys were treated at a local hospital for cuts and bruises and released.
Berger said his family planned to end their Grand Strand vacation early and return home to Rock Hill.
