COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Law enforcement statistics indicate the number of concealed weaons permits issued in South Carolina has risen sharply in a state vexed by violent crime.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Sunday that concealed weapons permits issued by the State Law Enforcement Division stood at 28,197 as of mid-October. That’s up from 14,630 permits issued in all of 2008 and far outstrips the number of permits issued in previous years.
The newspaper also reported that the number of concealed weapon permits rose nearly equally among men and women between 2005 and 2008.
SLED spokesman Paul Flondarina says South Carolina is following a national trend of rising numbers of concealed weapons permits. He says nearly 100,000 people in South Carolina now hold concealed weapons permits.

In my line of work I notice that a lot of CWP holders don’t carry their weapon. I always wonder what was the point in getting one if you’re not going to carry. But it is totally up to the holder if they are going to carry or not. My opinion of the raise in CWP holder is that every law abiding citizen that is able to pass the test should apply and carry. Thats my opinion and my comment. If you disagree, then lets agree to disagree. CWP holders have saved their lives and others. The police can not be everywhere and most of the time they end up writing the report in a shooting. So if CWP holder can help, so be it. If a CWP holder never fires a shot, then so be it. I would rather have one and not need it than to need one and not have it.
Back in 1996 when the law was passed a lot of people stated that there would be people shooting up the place. Hmmm where are those people now 13 years later?

According to FBI statistics, less than 1/10 of one percent of the violent crimes committed in the US are by CWP holders. 87% of violent crimes are committed by people with ILLEGALLY owned weapons.

“States with Right To Carry laws have lower violent crime rates. On average, they have a 24% lower total violent crime rate, a 19% lower homicide rate, a 39% lower robbery rate, and a 19% lower aggravated assault rate, compared to other states and the District of Columbia. The nine states with the lowest violent crime rates are all Right To Carry states. (Data: FBI)“

With the crime rate what it is, this does not surprise me.  Can you imagine how many are out there wihtout the permits?  That woudl be a frightening number if we knew!
