Spartanburg Deputy Crashes Patrol Car Enroute To Chase

» 12 Comments | Post a Comment

A Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy crashed a patrol car while heading to the scene of a search for suspects overnight.

Deputy Anthony Hawkins ran off the shoulder of the road near 170 Kensington Drive and then went back across the pavement and stopped against some small trees around 2:10am.

He suffered some bumps and bruises, but didn’t suffer serious injuries. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

SCSO Public Information Officer Tony Ivey says - to his knowledge - no charges have been filed against Deputy Hawkins for the crash.

Deputy Hawkins was responding to a search for three suspects after a chase ended on Foxhall Drive. The Sheriff’s Office says stopped a 1995 Honda Accord that was traveling recklessly.

The car sped off as the deputy approached the vehicle on foot. The officer chased the Honda into a dead end on Foxhall Drive. Three people jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

Deputies searched the area using a helicopter and a K-9 team, but didn’t find the people who ran from the car.

The Sheriff’s Office says the car had been stolen earlier in the evening and the owner wasn’t aware that the vehicle had been taken.

Deputy Hawkins - with his blue lights and siren activated - crashed minutes after the pursuit began. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The incident is also being reviewed internally by the Sheriff’s Office.

Stop to think what his family went through when they found out. If it was your family member would you be worried about the cost?

If this officer had died in this accident everybody would have been sorry but since he is ok everbody is going to get upset about paying for the car. I think you should stop getting down on him because I don’t see you putting your life on the line.

You know its a proven fact that most people who complain in a negtive way about how the Police do there job have at one time or another been in serious trouble with the law. Then of course, if it had been one of there family members that had been in some way hurt by the thugs that were running, well then they would be praising the Police. So to all who complain about the police doing there job, heres what to do: Go out, get you a dog, name it “Life” so you will have one!

Daniel) you are right about some of your post but if you read the story again there was no other officer in trouble. Just chasing another stolen car. I could see if he was going to an shooting call or something. Maybe they can send you the bill to repair the car.

It’s amazing we ask the police to do there jobs to the best of there ability then when something happens people complain about it.  People make comments about speeding but if one of there family was in trouble I would bet they would speed to get there.  People need to realize all police officers are family when one is in trouble help is on the way the same as if it was you and your family.  Most are more concerned with the money it cost to fix a car what about the officer who may be helping you or your family next.

At least this officer was on duty and and was responding to a call unlike the great cowboy in Wellford that just totalled his car the other morning just going to work. We all know speed was not a factor over on that side of town. Thank the good lord they are both OK.

well i know of another time sptbg co. was repsonding to another sptbg co police involved in an accident..no one was hurt in the accident he was responding to….but he was speeding - i mean you can only react so fast when you are speeding - but there was a man turning into a business on 129 in wellford…turning with a turn signal ON…..this cop came from out of NO WHERE - speeding - hit this man and sent him down a small hill in front of the business - TOTALED THIS MANS FORD RANGER TRUCK - luckly this man was not hurt and neither was the cop….But that shows what speed can do for ya and we as tax payers have to pay for these wrecked sptbg co. cars…...i understand emergencies…..i truely do and i’d want them there for me…but dang - how many cars are we gonna have to pay for ??
