Deputy Fights Suspect—Caught On Tape

» 5 Comments | Post a Comment

Spartanburg Co. Sheriff Chuck Wright says a deputy went into the “First Cash Pawn Shop” to go after a theft suspect who allegedly shoplifted from the nearby Dollar General store on Asheville Highway, Tuesday. The incident, which was caught on tape, shows the suspect trying to escape from the deputy while he was being cuffed. A lengthy fight then began. The store owner and the deputy both tried to wrestle the suspect, who put up a fight lasting nearly 6 minutes.

The deputy was able to get control, and cuff the man. Backup and EMS soon arrived, and the man was taken to jail. The deputy injured his head and was exhausted by the incident, but was otherwise ok.

The suspect, Edward Lee Beason, 24, is facing multiple charges.

Beason has a long rap sheet, dating back to 2003, for robberies, at least one of them violent.

Sheriff Wright says more needs to be done on the state level to reduce the number of repeat offenders walking back onto the streets and causing cases like this.

It doesn’t really mean too much what he has to say to his CELLMATES…..The fact of the matter is he is behind bars….Right after he bragged to his cellmates he had to ask to go to the bathroom like a first grader….BTW…How does what a lifelong criminal brags about behind bars have to do with our crime rate. I hope the officer is ok, and I personally would like to thank the officer and our Sheriff for taking another criminal off the streets. That’s really whats important here. The question is can our judicial system in SC keep him there. Our problem doesn’t lie within our Law Enforcement, our State Judicial System needs a major overhaul. Maybe some of those sentences could be maximum sentences for the crimes committed. I understand that runs into a whole other issue, overcrowding prisons and budget cuts….its a revolving door.

Chuck, that “gentleman” is now bragging to his cellmates that it took two of them to bring him down and how he sent a cop “up in the hospital”.

The officer was doing his job, much like the other officers of the Spartanburg County Sheriffs Dept. that we should be thankful for. Sheriff Wright has been an advocate of more officers in the streets since he took office. The number of officers patroling our streets are up from the number we had during Coffeys time as Sheriff. The thing we all have to realize is that with the economy in ruins and the jobless rate in SC at an all time high, people are desperate and sure Crime is going to be on the rise. It really gets under my skin, all the negative comments toward law enforcement in Spartanburg County. The flowers left at the site of the double murder in Spartanburg were a great gesture, but the comment about crime at an all time high and degrading the Sheriffs Dept. were uncalled for. I’m not sure what you folks are looking at when it comes to the rate of crime. It seems as if everytime I turn on the TV there are a laundry list of crimes to report from Greenville and Anderson County. If you folks aren’t happy with the crime rate in Spartanburg, move to Anderson and get a taste of a high crime rate and you’ll appreciate the job the Spartanburg County Sheriffs Dept as well as Spartanburg City Police Dept are doing. I am not a member of law enforcement and I don’t even have any family members in law enforcement but I sure have appreciated them being there the few times my family has needed them.

Give that deputy a medal or better yet make him sheriff. Spartanburg needs more like him if they are going to get their crime problem under control.
