Across the county, school lunch debt is increasing for districts as the economy takes a toll on families and their ability to pay.  A report in USA Today finds, half of school nutrition directors say they saw an increase in unpaid meals last year, and it’s creating a financial burden for school districts.

State’s Prepaid Tuition Program Struggling

The South Carolina College Tuition Prepayment Program is the latest victim of the nation’s struggling economy. State officials say the program, that allows parents to pay future college tuition using today’s rates, is anywhere from $30 million to $60 million dollars in debt. Ideally, the state invests the money parents pay into the program and when the student is ready to attend college there would be enough to pay for tuition.

While enrollment at community college is up about 10% nationwide, an Upstate college is up 19% from this same time last year.  One reason may be the fact that you aren’t limited to starting at just the fall, spring or summer.  They have “rolling enrollment” which means when you are ready to start, you pretty much can.

A new study shows that student performance in South Carolina schools has improved, but results on narrowing the achievement gaps for minority and low-income students are mixed. However, achievement gaps narrowed only at the high school level. The gaps were mixed for middle schools and widened at the elementary level.
