S.C. Legislators Expected to Resume Budget Debate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina legislators hope to wrap up work on the state’s $5.6 billion budget and send the bill to the governor’s desk this week.
The House expects Tuesday to debate final changes to a budget that includes a requirement that Gov. Mark Sanford request $350 million in federal stimulus cash that would be used for schools, colleges and police.
Legislative leaders hope the Senate goes along with what are expected to be minor changes so the spending bill avoids the need for a conference committee to work out differences.
Sanford on Monday called on taxpayers to press legislators not to spend the stimulus cash. He wants the money used to reduce state debt.
