The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election is Saturday, October 4th, which has people lining up at county voter registration offices. Even without the final numbers in, more people are registering to vote in this contest than there were four years ago.
According to Garry Baum at the State Election Commission, South Carolina has had about 230,000 new voters register this time, compared to 198,000 new voters four years ago. The total number of registered voters in the state will be about 2.5 million.
“Most county voter registration offices will be open on Saturday to accept voter registration applications if the person comes into the office. Or someone can mail a voter registration application to the office, as long as it’s postmarked by Saturday, October 4th,“ Baum says.
Earl Brown was in the Richland County Voter Registration office Friday to fill out a form because he had just moved from another county. “I believe every vote counts, but in order not to have any hassles at the polls on that day, I need to make sure that I’m good to go,“ he said.
It took him just a few minutes to fill out the form and turn it in. His new voter registration card will be mailed to him within three weeks, he was told. “It was real quick, real simple. Very easy to do,“ he said as he left.
